Hi, everyone this is my first post I am trying something a bit new, today I have decided that I am truly worried about the persons educating my son. Sunday my little guy will be getting one year older (hard to believe) and as most of you know this means that cupcakes will be arriving at school this week. My little man happens to be a major fan of Harry Potter. I expect on his 18th birthday to see the scar tattooed on his forehead. As any of you know there are some very special treats that would be awesome to take to school for my little wizard. I have searched the internet for caldron cakes and butter beer recipes. The next step was to email the teacher to check allergies, number of kids, and what time. The reply I received was somewhat surprising to me it included the number of kids with allergies that I don't need to worry about and what time, the next part got me we can't serve butter beer because it has beer in the name (OK I get the alcohol thing no big) but then she explained that it had been a well known drink like root beer that would be fine but since butter beer is an unknown thing we should call it butter soda. I then explained it was a Harry Potter thing. She then said that we just can't call it any kind of beer. To that I simply answered that I can't promise my little guy wouldn't call it by its proper name. Her answer just to be safe brings juice boxes. OK, at this point I was hot how dare this person tell me what I can and can't do for my child's birthday.
Once I got over that I started wondering... When is censorship too much? Now yes I know there are a few weird people that disapprove of a fictional book series but that is a subject for another time. I don't gripe when the girls bring pink cup cakes with my little pony or whatever is popular in the little girl world these days. They are kids and they like made up stuff mine just happens to like someone with his own theme park, (if you’re going to get upset about it jump all over Mickey he has like 5). My other question is with these books in the elementary school library with the words butter beer in them did someone sit there and black them out? If they read it in class do they say butter soda? Can you say root beer in school? If beer is such a bad word why sell it (with a root of course) in the soda machines or have it at ice cream parties? Why aren't the teachers using these things in class? We had green eggs and ham in first grade, what happened to all the other foods these kids could be exploring through literature, my fifth grade teacher made us Turkish delight do I remember what it tasted like. No, but I remember reading lion the witch and the wardrobe. Perhaps we should be a little less worried about the number of points the kids have and what words we can't say and be more concerned about getting them excited to read a book.
I am making cauldron cakes and butter soda, (I will coincide the name) after all a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. I will also let her know that any parent having an issue with me bringing butter soda to school is welcome to take it up with me. I will be glad to take them for something stronger so they can loosen up a bit. (Meaning coffee come on people head out of the gutter please.) Well I am stepping off the soap box now feel free to comment. If I disagree or don't like them I can delete them, just kidding. Unless you gripe about spelling or grammar then I will find a way to ban you, if you know me you know why if you don't why are you reading this.
